Chemical safety doesn’t stop after use — how we store substances on-site matters just as much. Incorrect storage can cause leaks, fires, or toxic reactions.
Why It Matters:
Flammable liquids, corrosive materials, and incompatible chemicals pose ongoing risks when improperly stored. Spills and chemical reactions often start with simple storage mistakes, especially in hot or confined jobsite conditions.
Key Points:
- Store chemicals in original containers whenever possible. If transferring, use approved, labeled secondary containers.
- Separate incompatible chemicals. For example, keep acids away from bases, and flammables away from oxidizers.
- Use designated chemical storage areas, ideally with spill containment features and proper ventilation.
- Keep flammable liquids in NFPA-approved cabinets away from heat, sparks, or sunlight.
- Never store chemicals near exits, stairs, or break areas.
- Regularly inspect containers for rust, leaks, or damage. Replace immediately if compromised.
- Ensure labels remain readable. If a label is fading or missing, replace it before storing.
✅ Safe storage isn’t just neatness — it’s a hazard control strategy.
Ask the Crew:
- Are our chemicals stored according to compatibility rules?
- Do we have a designated area for flammable or corrosive materials?
- Are all containers labeled and intact?
