Pre-Operational Equipment Inspections

Toolbox Talk:

Test the Brakes, Lights, and Horn

June 25, 2025

Before moving any heavy equipment, always check the systems that keep it under control.

Why It Matters:

Faulty brakes or missing lights can turn a routine task into a deadly accident. Equipment operators must verify they can stop, signal, and be seen and heard — especially in busy work zones.

Key Points:

  • Test the service and parking brakes before operation.
  • Confirm that all lights are functioning: headlights, brake lights, turn signals, and warning beacons.
  • Honk the horn before starting or reversing — make sure it works and others can hear it.
  • If any of these systems fail, tag the equipment out and report it immediately.
  • Never “work around” faulty safety systems — even for a short move.

✅ If you can’t stop it or signal it, you shouldn’t operate it.

Ask the Crew:

  • Have we tested the brake system and lights this morning?
  • What’s the process if the horn or brake lights aren’t working?
