Basic First Aid for Jobsite Injuries

Toolbox Talk:

Treating Cuts, Scrapes, and Puncture Wounds on the Jobsite

June 27, 2025

Minor injuries like cuts, scrapes, or punctures happen frequently on construction sites. Knowing how to treat them quickly and correctly can prevent serious infections or complications.

Why It Matters:

Even small wounds can become serious if not cleaned and covered properly. Rusty nails, dirty surfaces, or contaminated gloves can introduce harmful bacteria. First aid isn’t just about treatment — it’s about prevention of worse outcomes.

Key Points:

  • Always wash hands or wear gloves before treating any wound to avoid contamination.
  • Clean the wound immediately with clean water or antiseptic wipes to remove dirt or debris.
  • Apply antibiotic ointment if available, and cover with a sterile bandage.
  • Watch for signs of infection such as redness, swelling, pus, or increasing pain.
  • If a puncture is deep or caused by a dirty object, the worker may need a tetanus shot or further medical evaluation.

✅ Prompt first aid prevents minor injuries from becoming major problems.

Ask the Crew:

  • Do you know where the nearest first aid kit is located?
  • Are you comfortable treating a basic cut or puncture wound?
  • Who is trained in first aid on this site?
