Safe Scaffold Use and Access

Toolbox Talk:

Use Proper Access — No Climbing the Frame

June 25, 2025

Scaffolds must have safe, designated access points. Climbing the frame like a ladder is not only unsafe — it’s a serious OSHA violation.

Why It Matters:

Improper access causes many scaffold-related injuries. Using the frame for access increases the risk of falls, especially when wet, muddy, or not designed for climbing. Ladders, stairs, or built-in access are required for a reason — they’re stable and compliant.

Key Points:

  • Only access the scaffold using approved ladders, stair towers, or built-in access ladders.
  • Never climb cross braces, frames, or end rails.
  • Maintain three-point contact on scaffold ladders.
  • Make sure access points are clear and not blocked by materials.
  • If the scaffold is missing safe access, stop work and report it immediately.

✅ Proper access prevents preventable falls.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are we using only approved access methods?
  • Is any part of the scaffold being climbed incorrectly?
