Trenches must have safe entry and exit — no jumping in, climbing walls, or “just this once” shortcuts.
Why It Matters:
Most trench injuries happen during entry or exit. Without proper access, workers risk falls, twisted ankles, or triggering a cave-in. A few extra steps can prevent a serious injury.
Key Points:
- Trenches 4 feet deep or more require a ladder, ramp, or stairway.
- Ladders must be within 25 feet of every worker in the trench.
- The ladder must extend at least 3 feet above the trench edge.
- Access gear must be inspected and secure — not propped or makeshift.
✅ Don’t jump in. Don’t climb out. Use access gear — every time.
Ask the Crew:
- Are our ladders set up correctly and securely?
- Is everyone using them — or are shortcuts happening?
- Have you seen any trenches without safe access today?
