Toolbox Talk:

Use Proper Tie-Down Procedures for Transport

June 26, 2025

Securing heavy equipment correctly is critical to prevent accidents during transport.

Why It Matters:

Improperly tied-down equipment can shift, fall off trailers, or cause crashes on the road. Loose chains, missing binders, or failed anchor points have led to injuries, fatalities, and major property damage.

Key Points:

  • Always use chains and binders rated for the weight of the equipment being secured.
  • Follow DOT and manufacturer guidelines — most machines require at least four tie-downs, each with its own anchor point.
  • Attach tie-downs to designated anchor points on both the equipment and the trailer — not to hydraulic lines, guards, or handrails.
  • Check that chains are tight but not overstressed. Use edge protection to prevent damage to straps or machine components.
  • Recheck all tie-downs after the first 50 miles of travel and periodically during long hauls.

✅ A secure load isn’t just about safety — it’s the law.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are all tie-downs rated for this load?
  • Did we double-check anchor points and tension before leaving the site?
