Underground Utility Detection

Toolbox Talk:

Use Safe Digging Zones

June 22, 2025

Even after utilities are marked, digging must be done with extreme care — especially near the lines.

Why It Matters:

Utility locations aren’t always exact. Digging too close with equipment can cause major injuries or service disruptions. Treat the marked area like a danger zone.

Key Points:

  • Stay 18–24 inches away from utility marks on either side (the “tolerance zone”).
  • Use hand tools only within that zone to safely expose utilities.
  • If you uncover a utility, stop work immediately and notify your supervisor.
  • Never assume the depth or exact location of any line — even if previously marked.

✅ Caution beats collision. Expose it safely or not at all.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are we maintaining the correct distance from all marked lines?
  • Who’s assigned to hand-dig around utilities today?
  • What do we do if a line is hit or exposed?
