Scaffold Platform Safety

Toolbox Talk:

Watch for Gaps and Openings on Platforms

June 25, 2025

Even small gaps between scaffold planks can create serious trip and fall hazards.

Why It Matters:

Inconsistent or poorly aligned platforms increase the risk of twisted ankles, falls, or dropped tools. OSHA requires fully planked decks with minimal spacing for good reason — gaps compromise both worker safety and productivity.

Key Points:

  • Platforms must be fully decked with no more than a 1-inch gap between planks.
  • Avoid using broken, warped, or non-load-rated planks.
  • Check for any missing planks or shifted boards before starting work.
  • Do not stack materials in a way that blocks safe walking paths.
  • Replace damaged planks immediately and tag unsafe areas.

✅ Every step on a scaffold should feel stable and secure.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are there any gaps or soft spots on our platforms?
  • Have we inspected the decking for damage or alignment issues today?
