Spoil Pile Placement

Toolbox Talk:

Watch for Hidden Hazards in Spoil

June 22, 2025

Spoil piles may hide sharp tools, wires, rocks, or contaminated material.

Why It Matters:

Workers can be injured while walking near or clearing spoil piles. Unexpected debris or hidden items can cause cuts, trips, or chemical exposure.

Key Points:

  • Scan spoil for rebar, broken concrete, glass, or debris.
  • Keep a clear walking path around spoil.
  • Don’t use spoil piles for temporary storage.
  • Wear gloves and boots when working near spoil piles — hidden hazards can injure hands or feet.

Don’t turn spoil piles into hazard piles.

Ask the Crew:

  • Have we checked spoil for hazards today?
  • Are we using spoil piles for the wrong purpose?
