Trench Cave-In Prevention

Toolbox Talk:

Weather Can Trigger Cave-Ins

June 22, 2025

Rain, freezing, or even vibration from equipment can weaken trench walls.

Why It Matters:

What was safe an hour ago might not be now. Soil conditions change fast and silently — especially after storms or nearby activity.

Key Points:

  • Inspect trenches after rain, frost, or vibrations from heavy equipment.
  • The Competent Person must re-check trench stability and verify protection systems.
  • Never resume work until the trench is cleared as safe for entry.
  • Document changes and communicate with the crew during huddles or shift hand-offs.

Yesterday’s safe trench can be today’s trap. Stay alert.

Ask the Crew:

  • Has weather affected trench stability recently?
  • Are we inspecting and communicating after each storm or shift?
