Toolbox Talk:

Where Asbestos Might Be Found on the Jobsite

June 27, 2025

Asbestos isn’t always obvious—it can be hidden inside common building materials, especially on renovation or demolition sites.

Why It Matters:

Unknowingly disturbing asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) can release dangerous fibers into the air, putting everyone at risk. Knowing where asbestos might be lurking helps you avoid exposure.

Key Points:

  • Asbestos was widely used in buildings built before the 1980s.
  • Common sources include:
    • Pipe insulation and boiler coverings
    • Ceiling tiles and floor tiles
    • Roofing shingles and siding
    • Drywall joint compounds and textured paints
  • ACMs can look like ordinary materials—only lab testing confirms presence.
  • Cutting, drilling, sanding, or breaking these materials can release fibers.

✅ If you suspect it, don’t disturb it—report it.

Ask the Crew:

  • Are we working on or around old structures today?
  • Have all suspect materials been tested or cleared?
